Acting I (Theatre 280)
offers an introduction to contemporary acting techniques through group exercises and scene study. Areas covered include basic audition technique and enhanced character development through expanding the actor's range of vocal and physical choices. After successful completion of this course, the student will:
1. Learn and practice methods for analyzing plays
2. Incorporate basic Stanislavksi-derived techniques into one's own acting
3. Better understand the diversity and complexity of human nature
4. Broaden capabilities to imagine, empathize, concentrate, critically observe, and forcefully express ideas
5. Acquire greter composure (ease and naturalness of movement, speech, and thought)
6. Establish and refine criteria for effective public performance, end employ those criteria in evaluating self and others
7. Begin to develop a set of skills and the means to employ them as part of establishing one's own craft as an actor
Directing I (Theatre 310)
This course introduces students to the basic principles, techniques, and challenges of directing for the stage. Through text readings, class exercises, discussions, observations, analysis, and scene work it will provide theoretical consideration of and practical experience in the major aspects of directing contemporary plays. Instructional strategies include in-class exercises, readings from established professioanl directors, devlopmental directing assignments, discussion and demonstration, extensive directorial analysis of at least one play, the development of a rehearsal schedule and director's production book, and the directing of one ten-minute play for performance in a public forum. |
